Coaching as a Way of Being: Where Ethics, Advocacy, and Identity Meet

May 06, 2025

Coaching is more than what we do—it’s who we choose to be. When we say coaching is a way of being, we mean that the values, ethics, and presence we bring into our sessions also shape how we move through the world. In a time of deep division and urgent change, this way of being becomes both our ethical compass and our quiet revolution.

To coach from a values-driven place is to embody presence, non-judgment, and courage—even when no one’s watching. It’s leading with curiosity instead of certainty. It’s taking a stand without taking over.

When applied to advocacy, this mindset becomes transformational. A coach who lives their values can:

  • Stand for equity without abandoning neutrality
  • Name injustice without silencing others
  • Hold power accountable without stepping out of partnership

The ICF’s Core Values—Integrity, Respect, Excellence, and Collaboration—aren’t just checkboxes for credentialing. They’re daily practices. They ask us: Are you being who you say you are—both inside and outside the coaching space?

When coaching becomes a way of being, our advocacy shifts. We don’t just “do” inclusion. We live it. We don’t just “coach for impact.” We model it—in how we listen, how we challenge, and how we show up.
When coaching becomes a way of being, advocacy becomes an act of alignment—not ego.

Ask yourself: How do I live the coaching mindset when no one’s watching?
Consider sharing a personal advocacy statement that starts with your core values and names the world you’re helping to create in our upcoming webinar
